Charles Band wanted to directed a children's movie featuring little creatures, but was unable to due to lack of interest from investors. Stan Winston was approached to do the effects work, but dropped out because no script had been made yet. Shortly after Luca Bercovici came to Charles Band with a script, and the film eventually turned into Ghoulies.
